The first activities by surgeons and anaesthetists to treat Noma already started in 1996 as an initiative from German and Dutch medical doctors. The Noma Children Hospital was founded in 1999 as the result of international cooperation from:

AWD-Kinderhilfe (Germany)

Dutch Noma Foundation (the Netherlands)

Facing Africa (England)

Sokoto State Government

Federal Government of Nigeria

These foundations are still supporting this initiative by organizing and sending out medical teams 4 times a year to the hospital, as well as providing the necessary equipment. These teams operate upon Noma patients and interchange their knowledge with local surgeons about best practices in treating Noma.

Up to date, 32 teams have successfully operated on about 2500 patients.
